What Is Resin Bound Surfacing?

Resin bound surfacing is a fully permeable paving system made by hand-mixing UV-stable polyurethane resin with natural stone aggregates, then trowelling it onto a prepared base. The result is a smooth, seamless finish that allows rainwater to drain through naturally — making it SuDS compliant and planning-friendly.

Unlike resin bonded surfaces (where loose stone is scattered on top of wet resin), resin bound uses a through-mixed system — every stone is fully encapsulated. This means no loose stones, no weeds pushing through, and a surface that holds its integrity for 15–25 years with minimal maintenance.

Where We Install Resin Bound

Driveways

The most popular application. Resin bound driveways add instant kerb appeal, require no planning permission (being permeable), and are maintenance-free compared to block paving or gravel.

Resin bound garden patio — Scotland

Patios & Paths

A resin bound patio or path transforms your outdoor space. Smooth underfoot, weed-free, and available in dozens of aggregate colours to complement your garden design.

Resin bound commercial car park — Scotland

Commercial Car Parks

Planning-friendly and SuDS compliant for commercial applications. Resin bound is increasingly specified for retail, hospitality and office car parks where presentation and drainage both matter.

Resin Bound vs. Alternatives

Resin bound leads every category — including wet slip resistance, where it achieves 65–75 PTV versus the HSE’s 36+ benchmark.

PTV (Pendulum Test Value) measured to BS EN 16165 / BS 7976-2. HSE benchmark: 36+ PTV wet. Endorsed by HSE and UKSRG. * Block paving permeable if sand-laid, but planning permission typically still required for front driveways.

Three Installation Systems & Warranties

Every Envirosmart resin bound installation uses one of three fully specified systems — each with a supplier-backed warranty plus our 2-year workmanship guarantee. The right system is confirmed at your free site survey. Warranties are valid only when the full specification is followed.

Option A

Permeable Tarmac Base System

Full dig-out — new construction or complete replacement

15 Years
Supplier-Backed Warranty
+ 2yr Workmanship
1. Excavation

Full dig-out to survey-determined depth with geotextile separation membrane

2. Sub-Base

Minimum 150mm compacted Type 1 granular sub-base

3. Base Layer

80mm open-grade permeable tarmac — SuDS-compliant drainage layer

4. Wearing Course

UV-stable resin bound aggregate to specified thickness

Best for: New driveways, full replacements, properties requiring guaranteed SuDS compliance. The industry benchmark specification.

Option B — Premium System

VubaMac Base System

Full dig-out — next-generation engineered base with 100% recycled aggregate

Crack-resistant monolithic bond

Best for: Premium residential driveways, commercial car parks, and areas with ground movement risk. VubaMac’s flexible crack-resistant bond outperforms traditional tarmac bases — ideal for Scottish ground conditions.

Option C

Overlay System

No dig-out — for structurally sound existing surfaces only, assessed on site

5 Years
Supplier-Backed Warranty
+ 2yr Workmanship
Suitability

Structurally sound existing surfaces only — confirmed by on-site assessment before any commitment

Preparation

Existing surface repaired and primed, dual SRM reinforcement mesh installed

Wearing Course

UV-stable resin bound aggregate applied over prepared existing surface

Best for: Budget-conscious projects where the existing base is confirmed sound at survey. If the base isn’t suitable, we’ll recommend Option A or B — we won’t overlay a base that won’t last.

Resin Depth Guide

Correct thickness is determined by application, traffic loading and aggregate size. Under-specifying is the most common cause of premature failure — we always install to the correct depth for your project.

Resin Bound FAQs

With correct sub-base preparation and quality UV-stable resin, a resin bound surface installed in Scotland typically lasts 15–25 years. Our Scottish climate is well-suited — the permeable surface drains water away before it can freeze and crack the surface.
Generally no. Because resin bound surfacing is fully permeable, it complies with the government's rules on front driveways introduced in 2008 (which require new driveway surfaces to allow water to drain through or be directed to a lawn/border). This means no planning permission is required in most cases. We'll confirm this during the site survey.
Resin bound: resin and aggregate are mixed together then laid — creating a smooth, fully permeable surface with no loose stones. Resin bonded: resin is applied first, then loose aggregate scattered on top — creating a textured surface but one that is not permeable and where stones can become loose over time. We install resin bound, which is the higher-quality system.
Most residential driveways are completed in 1–2 days. Sub-base work (if required) may add a day. Larger commercial projects are programmed individually. We'll give you a clear start and completion date before work begins.
Yes — and it's one of our most requested features. We can create borders using contrasting aggregates, decorative inlays (stars, compass roses, family initials, company logos) and multi-colour geometric designs. Our portfolio shows several examples of custom inlay work.
